SNAP Eligibility (2024)
To qualify for SNAP, most households must meet both gross income and net income tests:

If your household includes someone who is 60+ or disabled, you only need to meet the net income test (not the gross income test), and asset limits are higher.

What Can You Buy with SNAP?
SNAP benefits can be used to buy:
- Bread, cereals, and grains
- Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Dairy products
- Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
- Seeds and plants to grow food
SNAP cannot be used for: alcohol, tobacco, vitamins/supplements, hot prepared food, or non-food household items.
How to Apply for SNAP
Apply through your state's SNAP agency — each state administers the program. You can apply:
- Online — most states have online applications at their social services website
- In person — at your local SNAP or Department of Social Services office
- By mail or fax — download and submit a paper application
After applying, most states process applications within 30 days. If you're in immediate need (very low income/resources), you may qualify for expedited SNAP within 7 days.
