What Does YTD Mean on a Pay Stub?

YTD stands for Year-to-Date. On your pay stub, the YTD column shows the running total of your earnings, taxes, and deductions accumulated from January 1 through your current pay date. It's the cumulative picture of your paycheck for the year — and it's what feeds into your W-2 at year end.

Why YTD Matters

1. W-2 Accuracy Check

Your December 31 pay stub YTD figures should match your W-2. Check these specifically:

  • YTD Gross Pay → W-2 Box 1 (wages, tips, other compensation)
  • YTD Federal Tax Withheld → W-2 Box 2
  • YTD Social Security Withheld → W-2 Box 4
  • YTD Medicare Withheld → W-2 Box 6

2. Social Security Wage Base Tracking

In 2024, Social Security tax (6.2%) only applies to the first $168,600 of wages. Once your YTD gross pay hits this cap, SS withholding stops. You'll notice your net pay increases slightly at that point.

3. 401(k) Contribution Limit Tracking

The 2024 401(k) limit is $23,000 ($30,500 if 50+). Watch your YTD 401(k) contribution to avoid over-contributing — excess contributions must be returned and are taxable.

Use YTD to estimate your tax refund

In November or December, compare your YTD federal tax withheld to your estimated annual tax bill using a tax calculator. If you've over-withheld, you'll get a refund. Under-withheld? You may owe — consider increasing withholding for remaining paychecks.

When Does YTD Reset?

YTD resets to zero on January 1 of each new year. If you switch jobs mid-year, your new employer's YTD starts fresh — even though you earned income elsewhere. Each employer tracks their own YTD separately. Your W-2(s) will capture the full picture at tax time.
